Arc Flash Hazard Risk Assessment

Increased awareness of the hazards of arc flash combined with increasing incidence of injury resulting from it have prompted changes to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations regarding proper labeling of electrical equipment where this event is likely to occur.

All electrical equipment likely to be serviced while energized has to have a warning label that clearly outlines the potential hazard. Increasingly, insurance companies are requireing that these electrical components be labels with proper, NFPA 70 E compliant labels.

In order to generate these warning labels it is necessary to first understand fully the risk associated with each piece of equipment. This is where Interstate steps in. As part of the Arc Flash Hazard Risk Assessment service, our professional electrical engineers:

  • analyze the electrical systems within your facility.
  • assemble findings in a detailed report
  • custom design warning labels for each system

The assessment study highlights relevant NFPA code references and depicts fault magnitudes and hard risk categories for each system.

What is Arc Flash?

A fiery electrical explosion, an arc flash is a common hazard for people who work on live electrical equipment. Fatal burns can occur up to FIVE FEET AWAY from the source and severe burns can occur up to TEN FEET AWAY. The pressure wave created by an arc flash explosion can damage eyesight, hearing or brain function.

Proper arc flash warning labels serve as an ever-present reminder of the risks and the precautions required to prevent unnecessary injury.
